Stutsman Warehouse: The Details

The final step in constructing the Eldon C. Stutsman main warehouse and corporate office is to add detail parts to the structure. Unfortunately, most of the intricate items are located on the east, or truck side of the building. As is the norm, the rail side of the structure is rather bare. Fortunately, there are still opportunities to spice up the appearance.

Downspouts were made from Evergreen .060 half-round styrene strips. Although I was unable to reproduce the total number of spouts due to compression, the overall ratio remains the same. That way, it still “looks” correct.

Atop the corporate office is a large HVAC chiller. I cut an opening in the roof, trimmed it with styrene L-angle pieces, and installed the Walthers AC kit. Additional doors and windows throughout the structure were supplied by Rix Products.

The entire building was then weathered with a combination of PanPastels and an India Ink and rubbing alcohol wash. I went easy on the walls and the roof, but made sure to hit the concrete foundation so that it would stand out as a different texture.

One final detail is essential for rail operations at Stutsman. Spot markers on the two main loading doors. That way, there’s no doubt as to where a carload should go.

And with that, the last blank spot on The Hills Line is filled in.
