The Front Door

Upon descending the steps into our basement, you’re presented with the following vista as your first view of The Hills Line.

Not exactly what I would call appealing, is it?

However, even in this primitive state, this ultimately represents opportunity. This pile of parts will ultimately become the last section needed to complete the layout and the sole reason that the prototype Hills Line exists.

This is the start of Eldon C. Stutsman, Inc.

Stutsman Ag Products is a multi-structure, multi-spot complex that receives a variety of products for sale to local farmers, regional suppliers, and national retailers. Their headquarters is located in Hills, Iowa at the southern end of the industrial spur.

Like many similar prototypes, The Hills Line exists to serve a single industry. Without Stutsman, there is no need for the rail line. Since it’s the sole purpose of the prototype’s existence, it makes sense to give it the same amount of importance as the model. Hence its placement as the first thing you see.

It’ll be a long time before this pile of parts even remotely resembles the actual complex. However, the opportunity it provides will give ultimate purpose to the layout, and to the railroad.

  1. Time for a few nice words about the great improvement in Walthers structure kits over the last 5 to 10 years. I used to pick over swap meet wrecks for salvageable parts; now I buy them in discount and use 80-90 percent. Some details could be finer but enhanced with some Miniprints details, they are very presentable.
